The e-commerce industry has become increasingly concerned that certification authorities were applying such a wide variety of validations that, even after an award of a certificate, Internet consumers were far from certain they were dealing with the business that they intended. Based on this, an industry trade group, the Certification Authority/Browser Forum, developed rigorous new guidelines and independent audit policies that must be applied before an Extended Validation certificate can be issued. Only EV Certificate holders will be able to display the browser bar signal—the color green—certifying that the online business is legitimate.
